A Legacy Turned Living Museum
The Junee Roundhouse Rail Museum, constructed between 1943–47 and officially opened in September 1947, was Australia’s last fully enclosed steam locomotive depot and the largest roundhouse in the Southern Hemisphere at the time.
It houses a striking 100-foot (33 m) turntable and 42 repair bays, complete with machine shops, coal stages, and de-ashing pits - vivid reminders of its steam-era origins.
Today, half of the roundhouse remains in active use by Junee Railway Workshop for locomotive servicing, while the other half operates as a museum run by the Regional Heritage Transport Association, offering a unique blend of industrial heritage and hands-on railway preservation.
What's on Display

A working steam-driven accident crane, one of the very few still operable in New South Wales.

A fascinating collection of rolling stock, including steam locomotives (e.g. 3609, 2413), diesel engines (e.g. #4872), a mail sorting van, sleeping car, and heritage rail motor.

A large working model railway, alongside archival railway equipment, photographs, and documents that trace local railway history.

Visitor Tips:
Please wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear.
Keep children close - running is not allowed near exhibits.
Remain within designated museum areas; the adjacent workshop is off-limits.
Great photography spots include inside train carriages and near the model railway.
