A New Chapter Begins

In May 2023, a heartfelt renovation began under the stewardship of Brendon and Emma Reynolds. Perceiving both history and potential in equal measure, they embarked on a mission to restore the hotel’s former charm—while infusing it with modern comfort.

After a year leasing the property, they took the leap to become its owners, driven by their belief in the building’s future and the importance of preserving community heritage.

Our Heritage & Origins

A Heritage Heartbeat Since 1878

The journey began in 1878, when local entrepreneur Christopher Crawley founded what was then known as the Railway Hotel—a name reflecting both its purpose and proximity to the tracks. In 1884, Crawley sold the venue to fund the construction of the famed Monte Cristo Homestead, now known as Australia’s most haunted house.

Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the hotel emerged as a vibrant community hub—hosting the Light Horse Brigade, and even serving as the original print site for the Southern Cross newspaper in a small shed out back. Its iconic Federation Filigree architecture, with elaborate cast ironwork and soaring ceilings, still gives a nod to its historic roots.
