Discover the Roundhouse Junee

The Junee Roundhouse Rail Museum is one of regional New South Wales’ most extraordinary railway heritage attractions, drawing rail enthusiasts, families, historians, photographers and travellers from across Australia to experience one of the nation’s most significant engineering and steam-era landmarks. Constructed between 1943 and 1947 and officially opened in September 1947, the Junee Roundhouse was Australia’s last fully enclosed steam locomotive depot and, at the time, the largest operating roundhouse in the Southern Hemisphere.

Built during the peak of Australia’s railway expansion, this monumental site became a powerhouse of steam locomotive servicing, maintenance and transport logistics, helping drive the movement of freight, agriculture and passengers across the Riverina, Sydney, Melbourne and beyond.

Rail + Industry + Engineering + Community + Australian History

The Museum and displays

At the heart of the Junee Roundhouse stands its remarkable 100-foot (33 metre) turntable, designed to rotate and direct locomotives into one of 42 repair and servicing bays.

An industrial engineering from Australia’s steam age.

Original roundhouse features include:

• 100-foot locomotive turntable
• 42 repair bays
• Steam locomotive servicing facilities
• Machine workshops
• Coal stages
• De-ashing pits
• Heavy engineering infrastructure

These preserved features offer visitors a vivid and immersive connection to the golden era of steam, showcasing the scale, innovation and workforce that powered Australia’s rail network.

Unlike many heritage rail sites, the Junee Roundhouse is not simply a static museum. Today, half of the roundhouse remains actively used by Junee Railway Workshop for locomotive servicing, while the other half operates as the Junee Roundhouse Museum under the care of the Regional Heritage Transport Association.

From towering locomotives and industrial machinery to preservation workshops and rail heritage exhibits, the Junee Roundhouse Rail Museum offers visitors an unmatched journey through Australia’s transport story.

It is one of the few places in Australia where visitors can witness both historic railway preservation and ongoing rail operations in the same landmark setting.
